Unique Wedding Cakes

Wedding cakes today have come a very long way from the earliest wedding cakes in history. The first wedding cakes on record were simple bread cakes that were broken over the head of the bride and called the brides cake.

As time progressed the bride’s cake evolved into a more elaborate style and flavor of cake. Fruit cake came to be the standard wedding cake, covered with white sugar, because sugar was considered a luxury item at the time.  This eventually inspired the tradition of a white wedding cake.

Today, many brides are less concerned with tradition, and more interested in slightly more unique wedding cakes. Couples now prefer a wedding cake which more closely reflects who they are, what they’re interested are, and their sense of style.

Keep in mind that the wedding cake is considered the centerpiece of the wedding reception itself. So a unique wedding cake that stands out and attracts attention and admiration is going to add a more personalized and memorable aspect to your wedding.

Before you make any final decision with regards to your wedding cake, do be sure to consider your budget.  The more unique wedding cakes often rquired more creativity on the part of the designer or baker, and therefore, they may cost more than a cake which is more standard.

Figure out how much you are willing to spend on your wedding cake then look for a cake and a baker that will fit within your budget.

Other things to remember when selecting a unique wedding cake:

_ the wedding cake should be in keeping with the theme of the wedding if there is one.  Dont make it so unique that it doesn’t make sense in the context of the rest of the wedding.

_ wedding cakes should enhance – not detract form – the atmosphere you create for your wedding day. If selecting a unique wedding cake means it is going to overshadow the rest of the wedding, consider carefully whether you are going to be happy with that effect.

Wedding cakes today do not have to be the traditional white or yellow cake with white frosting. If you prefer slightly more unique wedding cakes, be bold in considering wedding cake flavors. Mix it up a bit with a different flavor for every tier. Try something fun like Pina Colada cake – if you’re going for a unique wedding cake, something along those lines should make a good fit.

Consider shape, too, when shopping for unique wedding cakes. Round, sqaure and heart shaped cakes are pretty traditional.  A mad hatter style cake is more unique, for instance.  Some couples now are going for  have unique wedding cakes made of cupcakes. Have fun with the choices.

The advice I give to couples who express that they are interested in more unique wedding cakes is to take the time to decide what you want your wedding cake to say about you as a couple. Put some thought into it; when you take this approach, you’ll come up with wedding cake ideas that are as unique as you are.

Bottom line, regardless of whether you intend to make your own, or order through a bakery, consider your wedding theme, color and budget – and your own unique personality to come up with a unique wedding cake that perfectly suits your style.
